Before reviewing the content I should note that I read this on the Kindle version. As other reviewers have mentioned, the Kindle version has a few errors. There were several pages that ended mid-sentence and repeated paragraphs from several pages earlier--I'm not referring to "big ideas" that are emphasized in larger text boxes. There were a few instances when the cut-off material never surfaced. Thankfully, though, none of these instances were communicating anything significant.Content review is below.Howard W. Stone and James O. Duke offer readers an introductory method for thinking theologically. As they introduce the method they clarify that this is not a systematic theology; rather, it is a process by which Christians can reflect upon their understanding of what it means to be Christian in thought and practice. “Faith seeking understanding” is the primary theme of How to Think Theologically, meaning, “that as theologians we seek to understand what we believe about the Christian message of God” (pp. 1, 9). This understanding applies to individuals and communities of faith.Stone and Duke propose two foundational reference points for thinking theologically. The first reference, “embedded theology,” involves concepts about God and the world that individuals subliminally accept based on their experiences in and around the Church (p.15). The second reference point is “deliberative theology,” and as its name implies, is the realm in which analytical thinking occurs (p. 17). The authors note a co-dependent relationship between these two concepts, but do not satisfactorily account for varying depths within a believer’s theology. They argue that both types of theology are on a spectrum, but in doing so they leave readers wondering why “embedded theology” is discussed as distinct from “deliberative theology.” All “embedded theology” has—by necessity—undergone some level of deliberation. For, as the authors note, when a person identifies himself as a Christian, he has already begun the process of “faith seeking understanding.” Therefore, all “embedded theology” is “deliberative theology.” Instead of confusing readers with an extended discussion of embedded and deliberative terminology, the authors should have noted the importance of “faith seeking understanding” and moved more quickly into teaching their process of analysis and construction. This process contains three steps. First, the individual gathers the information available within a given situation, noting the presented arguments, as well as the underlying predispositions of all parties involved. Next, he evaluates how faithfully each position embodies the Christian gospel. Finally, the theologian finds a creative way to communicate the most accurate and adequate exposition of Christianity for the scenario. The final chapters of the book help readers practice this process by moving them through generic case studies and providing them with diagnostic questions for self-evaluation. After thinking through these exercises readers should have a grasp of this method of theological reflection. For Christians who either have never considered themselves worthy or never intentionally thought about the theological thinking process, How to Think Theologically provides a brief primer for theological reflection. This book offers questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, increasingly drawing readers to become more conscientious about how and why they understand their beliefs. After analyzing various scenarios, one cannot walk away without contemplating how faithfully he or she represents the Christian message of God.

One might wonder about the accuracy of this tale of the Bible class in a small church of Christ in a rural community. The story begins with a member reading the assigned text for the day. The text could come from the Old or New Testament, but the result is the same. The brother reads the inspired text while the teacher asks the member to comment on the reading. Often, the story unfolds with the reader starting and stopping at one verse. The question rarely changes, no matter who the storyteller is. He asks, "What does the text mean?" The reader answers with an "It says what it means and means what it says." One must wonder if Bible study in the churches of Christ has really been this simple. From my experience as a preacher in the church, this has not been case, even though there have been times when I might have wished it were so. Often a text is read, but instead of a simplistic result, there is a huge gambit of answers. Some of these responses are insightful into the text, while other comments seem totally foreign to the original text. Sometimes the comments decline into a "reader's response" methodology of Biblical interpretation. This usually falls into the category of "what this means to me." There is certainly room for a devotional reading of the text, but true theology is concerned with truth, not personal application. This is why the book How to Think Theologically is helpful for the Bible student. Most Bible students have a theology even if one does not use this term. The term "theology" simply means "the study of God." However, theology is more than an academic pursuit; it provides the bases of life and church. In church, there are always choices that one must make. Does the congregation update the pews or provide a bonus to a missionary? These decisions are not choices between good and evil, but rather between good and good. The theology of a person will dictate the direction of these difficult decisions. Also, a good theological foundation will provide support for those difficult times in life. If there is little theological foundation, then when calamity invades a person's world, the foundation will crumble under a weak knowledge of God. The author does an excellent job of helping a person move from an "embedded theology" to a "deliberative theology." This is the process of "growing in grace and love." An embedded theology is one that has always been taken for fact. But this knowledge can be seriously challenged one encounters real life. One might call this the parent's faith, in reference to a teenager. But God's people must move from assumed theology to deliberative knowledge. This is the process of studying the scriptures to "see if these things are so." The author does this through inviting the student to engage in the stream of theological thought through the centuries. One does this by looking at four sources. One needs to be somewhat discerning over the author's prioritization of the four sources, as he seems to give equal weight to all four, but for God's people, scriptural authority from the Bible must come first and foremost in creating a Biblical framework. Nevertheless, the four sources of scripture, tradition, reason, and experience can be tools to create a theology for the average man or woman. Probably the greatest blessing of this book is the stimulation to reflect on one's faith. It is too easy to assume that one has the correct answers, or one has a strongly developed doctrinal understanding, and this book causes one to seriously ponder the development and finished product of one's theology. After reading this text, one will be more equipped to examine the bases, proper ordering, and the norms of theology. Theology is not for the shelves of scholars but for Christians preparing to have faith in the fray of the real world.

Whenever it comes to reading books on Theology or books written by Theologians I simply reach out and take 2 aspirins as a pre-emptive move. It just simply hurts to both understand these scholars and to realize how little I know. This book on the other hand is written in a non-threatening way as a sensitive scholar may speak to his eager to learn but scared students. After reading this book I actually felt confident enough to begin sorting out my faith on my own and not simply rely on commentaries. In the process Theology became real, vibrant and even up lifting as I applied the results of this book. Now don't get me wrong. I had to re-read some chapters to get it all but that was because I wanted to get it all and not because it was written in "high english". The authors actually made me feel that I wanted to get it and that I could get it.I especially liked the explanation of sequential thinking vs. parallel synthetic thinking on page 60. This helped me understand how and why I think the way I do.Another great aspect of this book is that it only 125 pages long which put me at ease when I sat down to read a book on theology that wasn't 500 pages long. The authors get to the point and have to be clear about it if they want to make a small book a success. And they did!!!
