Dr. Boettner was not a Fundamentalist as alleged in some reviews. His book on The Millennium is quite liberal and non-literal when it comes to Scripture as an example. He was Orthodox Presbyterian. And this book was written from the perspective of investigating the differences between the Roman Church and Protestantism and was used by the US Supreme Court as an authoritative source for not supporting parochial schools with public tax dollars in the 1960s. This book was updated as recently as 1985 before Boettner went to be with the Lord.Having said that, this book should be approached as a study on the differences between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. Both groups claim to be Christian so Boettner has the right to examine and state his case when it comes to testing that definition. As for the accusations his facts are wrong I have yet to see his documentation and references proven wrong. We live in a culture where no one likes to be questioned or told they are wrong on anything. I have much respect for Roman Catholic people I have in my friendships. I am also aware and pleased that their church has stood for the basics of Christianity for so many years. If a book was written analyzing my faith as a Protestant I would approach it as a learning experience and try to learn from it. Who wants to be wrong with belief system? There is much difference between Protestant faith and Catholicism and Boettner is trying to make the point that primarily it is faith in Christ as Savior which saves not dependence on sacramental ministries or any certain church system of any kind. If I were a Roman Catholic I would be offended at some of the information but then I would also examine my beliefs as Paul said in his letter to the church in Corinth to "make sure I am in the faith." And didn't the Savior say "those who are not against us are for us." That's the approach that we should take. Let's find common ground in the basics of Christianity and share with the world that needs to hear the Gospel the Good News that God loves them, has purchased their forgiveness and promised them future hope if they believe it.
I have a copy of this book. As a cradle Catholic, I like to understand the perspectives of non-Catholics who criticize and attack the Catholic church. A few years back, I listened to a talk given by Dr. Scott Hahn who is a renowned biblical scholar in the Catholic faith. In his talk, he reminisced of his days as a Presbyterian minister and young evangelical college student and how he used this very book in those days to convince Catholics of the errors and horrors of Catholicism and how he was effective at pulling many from the church. He has since converted to Catholicism and has worked hard to make amends for the errors of his ways then. I purchased the book because of his story and because I wanted to get a good sense of where all the misconceptions come from as he said most of the false information on the Catholic church and propaganda came from this book... the Anti-Catholic Bible to some. When I read the book, I have to say I was saddened and hurt at some of the misinformation that was contained. Like I said, I am a cradle Catholic, 53 years old so I think I know what I believe and what the church I am part of teaches. This book does not even come close to conveying an accurate view of Catholic teachings and beliefs. It paints a very ugly picture... caricature of a church that I'm not familiar with. Let's just say... if the Catholic faith were anything even close to what is portrayed in this book, I would have left it a long time ago. So, if you want to read this book... I at least encourage you to read books that offer an opposing position of the church and give an honest assessment. Perhaps a book written by an authority within the Church? I mean if you really want to know how something is... go to the actual source ;)
counterfeit christnitys hates this books because it exposes there wicked church called catholic .. u can prove this book true if u look up old history's...
The book is barely used and exactly as advertised. Contents are as advertised as well.
The book is a very interesting read for Christian historians.
The author, anti-dispensationalist postmillennialist Loraine Boettner, began his analysis (pp. 4-7), hit-job, on Roman Catholicism, published in July 1962 and October 1989, by insisting that the Papacy can not be considered a good bulwark against Russian communism and its expansion in Eastern Europe. Hmmm, kind of like Pope John Paul II was not a good ally of President Reagan ? John Paul II and his support of Solidarirty was not at all helpful ? It begins with intellectual incongruity and regresses on each page. Good laugh for those who read anti-Catholic propaganda. Read Boettner's anti-dispensationalist postmillennialism in his Millennium.
Found the book to be full of unbeleivable info, it is differently an eye opener, the views of the author were well documented
