The Informant: A True Story, by Kurt Eichenwald

From an award-winning New York Times investigative reporter comes a gripping account of one of the most captivating and bizarre tales in the history of the FBI and corporate America. It was one of the FBI's biggest secrets: Mark Whitacre, a senior executive at Archer Daniels Midland--America's most politically powerful corporation--became a confidential government witness. Putting his career and family at risk, Whitacre, along with a small team of agents, tapped into secrets at ADM that led the FBI to discover the company's scheme to steal millions of dollars from its own customers. But as the FBI and federal prosecutors closed in on ADM, they suddenly found that everything was not all that it appeared. While Whitacre was cooperating with the Feds and playing the role of loyal company man, he also had his own agenda. Whitacre became sucked into his own world of James Bond antics, imperiling the criminal case and creating a web of deceit that left the FBI and prosecutors uncertain where the lies stopped and the truth began.Meticulously researched and richly told, The Informant re-creates the drama of the story, beginning with the secret recordings, stakeouts, and interviews with suspects and witnesses to the power struggles within ADM and its board--including the high-profile chairman Dwayne Andreas, F. Ross Johnson, and Brian Mulroney--to the big-gun Washington lawyers hired by ADM, and on up through the ranks of the Justice Department to FBI Director Louis Freeh and Attorney General Janet Reno.A page-turning real-life thriller that features deadpan FBI agents, crooked executives, idealistic lawyers, and shady witnesses with an addiction to intrigue, The Informant tells an important and compelling story of power and betrayal in America.

I knew of Mark but hardly "knew" him. Nutrition and feed formulation has been my professional life for almost 60 years. As a poultry nutritionist I used the amino acids that were involved in price fixing. The purchasing was the responsibility of the purchasing department. I once had a meeting scheduled with Mark. He flew into town late at night , then departed early the next morning. He left a message. "Had to leave." That was strange. Fascinating Book.

The story was absolutely amazing. The writing, however, was not the best. There were too many characters to follow. Of course, they were real characters so they had to be in the book. It was more informational than entertaining, i.e., it was "work" to read. I finished it, but I wouldn't want to read another by the same author. A more skilled storyteller could have made it more readable, I think.

Extraordinary story, and scary because similar price fixing schemes that are in the press today by major corporations. Riveting and hard to put down. And what’s very interesting is the weaving of political influence and the “K” street legal/ lobbying industry on behalf of corporate leadership. Where was the Board of Directors/ buddies of the Chairman? Every MBA program in the country should make this mandatory reading.

I was very interested in reading this book.Very long and too much details that I felt wasn't too interesting in places. I viewed a video of Mark Whitacre on Utube since he was released from prison. Hope he can stay focused now on his mission about Bi-Polar condition. Also a movie about this book staring Matt Damon.

Although the book is well written, it takes way too long to to get results, the endless interviews and meetings have worn me down. I am over 250 pages in and have finally given up and put it down.It may be worth the read; but I'll never find out.

This is a true story about the inner workings of a huge company. The number of people charged with corruption is astounding. The number that did a plea agreement was even more astounding.Great story and worth the time it takes to read.

Kudos to the author for making this piece of nonfiction writing as suspenseful as any piece of fiction. The ability to translate to the common reader the ins and outs of a worldwide price fixing scheme, is evidence that this guy really knows his stuff.

Holy Cow, WHAT a splendidly researchewd and written account of the Archer Daniels Midland price-fixing and fraud investigation and trial. The craftsmanship of the author is immediately apparent from page One! The movie, while very good, does not capture the stunning events thatthis author recounts so masterfully.
